Nfl | Introduction maanke | New reading material again.:)
This document gives a short introduction in configuring a MiNT-Net network. It is advisable to
read through the whole document, not just the configuration part.
Precondition is a correctly installed MiNT inclusive MiNT-Net. In this text I assume that you have
set up your system with the EasyMiNT installer (version 1.4 or higher). The set of included packages
simplifies configuration a lot. Depending on what you have in mind for your system some additional
rpm packages have to be installed. EasyMiNT does not supply daemons for some services that provide
external access to your machine. This document is meant for networking newbies, so I won't go very
deep into the matter. Furthermore I tried to make things as simple as possible, network admins may
excuse me.:)
The things written down here aim at the small network at home, for moving some files from one machine
to another. Security matters are not considered, this would go way beyond the scope of this document.
No chance to avoid further reading. If you connect your home network to the internet by means of this
tutorial and loose private data due to poor configuration, I have warned you.:)

Nfl | Introduction maanke | You might wonder if you need "network" at all. Well, let me say yes and no.:)
Do you have only one computer at home? Then you don't necessarily need it. But if you want to connect
your Atari to the internet via DSL, then again you need it.
Do you have more than one computers at home? Then it is quite handy to build up a network. This makes
it quite comfortable to exchange data between your machines, even if running different operating systems.
Nowadays one can network almost everything, let it be an Atari, Mac or PC.
Well, and as life is like it is, you have really have to work for your success. Configuration of the
network is not that simple. There are even experts who do nothing but maintaining networks, the so called
network administrators. As their services are far too expensive for John Doe, you have to do it yourself
again.:)

Nfl | Introduction maanke | You should acquire a text editor that supports Unix style line breaks. There are several editors
with this feature available for Atari, like QED, Luna or vim. You will need it for doing the
configuration.
If you try without, have fun! It is highly probable that nothing will work afterwards.
If you want to learn more about the differences between Unix and "common" line breaks, have a look
at the article "MiNT-Net for Lamers". There you will find descriptons of further programs like ping,
route, traceroute or ifconfig, too. We'll need them later.
